ファランクス 近接防御火器システム (CIWS) – Phalanx Close in Weapon System (CIWS)

ファランクス 近接防御火器システム (CIWS)：6砲身の20mmガトリング砲M61A1を搭載し、捜索・追跡レーダーと火器管制システムを一体化した完全自動の防空システムで、対艦ミサイルからの防御を主目的とする。
また、基地に飛来するロケット弾や迫撃砲弾を迎撃する、陸上配備型のファランクス・C-RAM(LPWS)が現在試験運用中。

The Phalanx CIWS is a close in weapon system for defense against anti-ship missiles.
Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx has been used by multiple navies around the world, notably the United States Navy on every class of surface combat ship, by the British Royal Navy in its older escorts (where weight limits the use of the heavier Dutch Goalkeepers 30 mm CIWS), by the United States Coast Guard aboard its Hamilton-class and Legend-class cutters, and the navies of 16 allied nations.
A land based variant, known as C-RAM, has recently been deployed in a short range missile defense role, to counter incoming rockets and artillery fire.
